Some Advice about Accessing Mental Health Services:
It can be very challenging to find a practitioner in our area with current openings for new patients.
One of the first things is to look at the website for your health insurance carrier and see who is a participating provider.
If you google a participating provider, you may find that they have a website or other information on their practice so you can make an informed decision.
Because therapists in private practice spend most of their time in session, it is generally preferable to reach out via email rather than phone when possible. This gives the provider a paper trail of the communication and allows them access to respond when they are able.
It often takes several weeks to get in to see an outpatient provider. Think about it like a medical specialist that takes some time to get into. Outpatient therapy is not a crisis or emergency type of service.
If you feel like your need for mental health service is pressing, get a first appointment scheduled even if it is weeks away. In order to manage the time before the appointment, reach out to your primary care Dr., friends, family, community organizations or churches for short term support. If you feel that you cannot manage your symptoms this way or if you feel acutely suicidal or homicidal, please get to your nearest emergency room immediately. CPEP (Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program) is located at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, NY
Getting into outpatient therapy is a great step for many people but it is a process.
